Spy F & the Zakulas return to the scene of the crime.
One year after the release of the 7inch single "Afragko Agori", they give us a record with condensed memories and emotions, boys with no money that are mutated to sensitive lovers, decadent football players, weird mcs.
Anger gives way to self-sarcasm, lust becomes passion. It is a record that dives into melancholy, but not without having taken a deep breath that can bring it triumphantly to the surface. There's a pervert touch too, just like in the everyday madness of modern cities.
Music-wize, it is difficult to label. Scratches, samples, melodic e-bow riffs on the guitar, freestyle rhythms get all together in various mixtures and are covered by the unstoppable mcing.
A careful listen will reveal numerous influences, a result of the band's very identity. The lyrics are written by Dimitris Ntouramanis - rough, romantic, angry, in love. Spyros Faros, well known from his long-lasting presence in the greek scene since new wave, recalls the past and brings it into modern. Nikos Artemis discovers samples from the '70s, clicks & cuts and rhythms from the german scene. Giorgos Argyridis, an exceptional turntablist, does programming and scratches, giving the emphasis in the band's hip hop dimension. Kostis Kousoulos is responsible for the final sound and the effects, while Coti has taken over the mastering!
The result can be described as the new music reality, it sounds "weird, but never betrayed". The fact that it's difficult to categorize, as well as the multiple references traced here make the album a reference of its own.
The surprise of the cd is baby zakula, the enhanced cd contains zakulas' world: sound, images, samples, videos, scratches, lyrics, animations, interactive mixers, unreleased tracks -- as designed by magenta brothers (Nikos Artemis, Giorgos Matsiotas). Nikos Artemis has also designed the cover art and the accompanying poster.
The live performances of Spy F & the Zakulas could be at least described as rich in tension; after all, the radically different takes on their songs are a rather usual phenomenon.
